SURGE FACTOR(Y)

Shaun Caton

Saturday 5th June 2021

Since the early 1980's Caton has presented about 650 live performances worldwide and in the 58th Venice Biennale (2019).
During the 1980's his performances were of extremely long duration, often lasting for days or weeks on end, constantly changing their shape and form. Moving through the 1990s up to the year 2000 Caton collaborated with many other performance artists in the UK, USA and Europe. Through the 2000s to the present day his work has changed to become totally immersive and participatory, instantly noticeable by the hallucinogenic use of coloured shadowplay, grotesque masks and bizarre scenarios.

In 2021 Caton's work is unique in the world of performance in that it is unlike anything else and frequently imitates the many paintings and collages he makes. He calls performances 'living pictures' that 'come from  dreams '. Each performance is  interwoven with densely packed layers of images  flitting backwards and forwards in time as they reach many climaxes in a seething epiphany.  His performances are told in a violently beautiful  language of the future, they are darkly mischievous vignettes without words. Once witnessed they are seldom forgotten.
